The Boxing Project has been running from 2013 and has proved to be successful in providing people with an opportunity to become involved in physical training in a relaxed and informal setting.
Every Monday and Thursday morning from 10am a minibus picks up people from various areas around Perth. The training sessions are run at the Fair City Boxing Club Gym in Scone, just outside the City of Perth. The training sessions run between 11am – noon. After the training session there is the opportunity for informal mixing in the gym and then people are then transported back to the CATH Day Centre for a meal.
The project has three main elements:
- Training in boxing.
- An Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) Accredited Course.
- Support to participants to act as Boxing Ambassadors.
The ASDAN Course, delivered by Perth College, takes place in the CATH Day Centre, and covers topics including diet, the role of nutrition in health, and preparation for undertaking the Boxing Ambassador role. A small number of participants, who express interest in the role, are supported to act as Boxing Ambassadors. In this role, they promote the project to their peers, to residents in other hostels and to the wider community. However everyone is welcome to attend the gym training and no one is required to take part in the Ambassador training if they do not wish to do so.
